Eat well in Surprise, no matter what you’re in the mood for.

Surprise has grown in recent years, and so too have its culinary offerings. We uncover the best diners, cafes and restaurants that locals can’t get enough of.

If You’re in the Mood for: Hearty Breakfast Fare

Tucked into an unassuming shopping center is Nick’s Diner II, a longstanding favorite that became so popular it had to move to a second, larger location — hence the name. Menu items range from omelets and waffles to hearty combos of steak and eggs that will satisfy even the largest appetites.

For the late risers, Jim’s Burgers and Eggs serves up breakfast all day, along with a selection of charbroiled burgers and sandwiches. Southern-fare diehards, on the other hand, flock to Biscuits Cafe for homemade biscuits and gravy or chicken and waffles.

If You’re in the Mood for: Something Sweet

Family-owned and operated, the Boyer Bakery is home to one of Surprise’s most impressive pastry cases, full of homemade muffins, cookies, croissants and more. Offerings change daily based on what’s fresh and in-season, and gluten-free and vegan options are always in the mix.

For an early morning bite, Star Donuts offers a full variety of fresh doughnuts along with coffee, smoothies, muffins and croissants beginning at 5 a.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. on weekends.

If You’re in the Mood for: Global Flavors

The art of Vietnamese cooking is on full display at Saigon Kitchen, which has been a local favorite restaurant for more than a decade. In addition to traditional options like pho and banh mi, guests can try unique dishes like lemongrass Brussels sprouts and surf-and-turf fried rice. Make it a date night and enjoy a nightcap at the adjacent SK Lounge, where cocktails are inspired by the restaurant’s Asian flavors.

For Mexican cuisine, head to Rio Mirage Cafe, where the tortillas are handmade and the authentic Sonoran recipes have been handed down through generations.

If You’re in the Mood for: A Great Beer

Home to the original State 48 Brewery location, Surprise is a veritable hotbed of local brews. Enjoy wood-fired pizza along with Arizona-inspired beers like the Javelina Hefeweizen and the PHX Porter from State 48’s lively, dog-friendly patio or sip on a perfectly poured Guinness at the Irish Wolfhound Pub, where the spirit of the traditional Irish pub comes to life.

For a selection of over 20 beers on tap and delightful dishes like bonfire meats, check out Bonfire Craft Kitchen & Tap House. The restaurant even has its own flagship beers, including Bonfire Blonde, Bonfire Beach Bum IPA and more.

If You’re in the Mood for: A Date Night Destination

Leave the kids at home and grab a table at Quench Taps and Tapas, where the tables are intimately arranged, and high-chairs and booster seats are nowhere in sight. Shareable plates include Blistered Balsamic Tomatoes with Burrata, Truffle Popcorn and Whipped Ricotta with Pesto and Tomato Jam.

Alternatively, locally-owned Vogue Bistro features all the makings for a lovely night out: With French American fare, signature martinis and stunning sunset views, it’s become a beloved date-night destination. And while the atmosphere may be a bit more upscale, there’s nothing stuffy about the place — this is Arizona, after all.
